I am frequently asked questions such as:

How many people read your site?

How many visitors do you get to your website?

To answer those questions I have copied below the web statistics that we use internally to see how effective we are at reaching the public at Island Politics. These are the raw web statistics and have not been modified to reflect those that post here and manage the site. To reach an accurate figure we usually reduce the number of visits by 20% per author for the local areas that we have authors and that has not been done in the statistics below. (we have 4 active authors and 6 more that post infrequently, all of them from our local area)

The figures below cite actual “visits” not “hits” to the site. For a description of the terminology and a description of both “hits” and “visitors” see this page:

We have recently had a large increase of really hilarious actions by a few of our readers. They actually believe that we will allow someone to come into our site and disrupt every conversation, make rude comments and generally just act childish.

Here are a few of the most recent posts by one of our liberal poster children, notice how he first he attempts to gain access past our spam/junk filter by posting an innocuous message then it escalates into rather rude behavior. Humorous to think that any one person would spend the amount of time he does in making the attempts he does.

Is the Whidbey News Times and Sound Publishing now censoring users in their comments section?

It is now becoming clear why the Whidbey News Times and Sound publishing swiched the comments system in their online newspapers to the Facebook comment system. It is apparently so they can control who posts to their comments section.

If you think that you are seeing all of the comments posted in a particular article be aware that many of the posters posts may not be visible to you.

Facebook has incorporated visiblity settings in their comments social plugin that allow the moderator to set the visiblity of posts made by individual posters to their comments section. What this means is that if the Whidbey News Times does not want your posts to appear they set your “visibility” to “has limited visibility” and your post appears to you and anyone that may have friended you but it they will not appear to the general public. There is no notification of this to you as the poster and your posts will appear to you as long as you stay logged into your Facebook account. If you log out of your Facebook account the comments will not be visible to you either.

This is a pretty good way to control abusive posts but it seems as this tool is being used to censor posters from having their posts visible in the comments section.

As you can see from the post below there is no abusive content in the post and it is whithin both the Whidbey News Times Terms of Service and Facebooks Terms of Service.

Apparently The Whidbey News Times has decided that they do not want to allow posts from certain users. As I have never posted anything against the Whidbey News Times Terms of Service I can only assume it is because of political views.

While the Whidbey News Times certainly does have the right to control who posts to the comments section it does make one wonder just what other posters and what other messages are being censored by the newspaper.

In an article by the Northwest Daily Marker there is a sad tale of drunken debauchery and some pretty hard core drinking by Rick Larson’s staff members while on the public payroll.

Pretty shocking behaviour while on the job and on the public payroll…

Follow the post link above for a you tube video of a disturbing display by the chair of the Board of Island County Commissioners Angie Homola. Notice that when one of the other Commissioners places a motion on the floor for a point of order that it is ignored by the chair which allows the unprofessional personal attacks to continue. During the Monday the 21st meeting of the BOICC and during the public comment period several people spoke of the unprofessional comments and personal attacks that were made at the previous commissioners meeting. The ICC commented on these constituent comments during the Commissioner Comments.

Ms Homola immediately began her attacks on Commissioner Emerson by stating that there were some comments made in the local newspaper and then goes on to tell us that they will not entertain addressing these comments. Then why was the subject of the comments in the paper even brought up? These unknown comments in the paper which Ms Homola claims are false are unknown and not in the minutes of the meeting or in the discussions. Ms Homola goes on to state that the commissioner meeting was recorded and the recording is available on the counties website. Interesting dialogue to say the least.

I agree with Ms Homola that all resident of the Island need to view this video, it was shocking in that the display by Angie Homola and Helen Johnson was nothing more than a personal attack on Ms Emerson.

The video of the previous meeting comments in question can be found here:

Here is another interesting tidbit of information concerning the unprofessional conduct of Angie Homola and Helen Price Johnson at the last commissioners meeting.

The justification of the attack on Kelly Emerson by Angie Homola and Helen Price Johnson is based on a comment by an alleged complaint by a “concerned citizen” at the October 3rd, 6:00 p.m. Commissioner’s Public Hearing on the Budget. Well as it turns out this comment to the commissioners was made by none other than the Vice Chair of the Democrat party. Nothing like having a member of your own political party speak at meetings to make up issues that you can later use as material for a personal attack. In defense of the Vice Chair it is apparent that she was not making a complaint but merely asking a question. This has been twisted to make it appear that she was making a complaint about Commissioner Emerson, please view the video and judge for yourself.

You can view the meeting where the Vice Chair of the Democrat party makes this comment to the commissioners by clicking here, it starts at time marker 1:41:20 :

Here is a link to a very sad and unprofessional exchange between our county commissioners.

http://www.avcaptureall.com/Sessions.aspx#session.3c2a24fd-a5c4-4bae-a3d5-971f7ed27228

The exchange in question starts at 50:26 of the meeting.

The subject is appointment of chair of the county commissioners. Normally in past history the chair position is rotated between the commissioners. With Angie Homola just having the chair and Helen Price Johnson having the chair before Ms Homola it was natural to think that this rotating chair would have been appointed to Kelly Emerson. This is not what happened in fact what happened is one of the most disturbing displays of unprofessional conduct I have ever seen coming from our elected officials.

At the link below is a you tube video created by another Island County citizen and constituent of Kelly Emerson that shows the atrocious behavior of commissioners Angie Homola and Helen Price Johnson. Even though Angie Homola led the unfounded attack on Ms Emerson, Ms Helen Price Johnson should have stood up in defense of the decorum of the Island County Commissioners office and demanded that the unfounded personal attacks cease. She did not and in fact she joined in the attack on the other commissioner.

This is certainly NOT the type of behavior and personal, professional attacks that we as citizens expect from our elected officials.

The defenders of the environment and scrutinizers of all things planning and building related here in Island County and the founders of the Whidbey Island Environmental Network have been charged by the Island County Planning and Development Department for building without permits. It seems there are multiple violations of building codes on multiple properties and multiple structures on their property that were not built with building permits.

What is interesting about this complaint is the fact that it took 4 months to get the county to take any action on the citizens complaint that was filed, it took another 3 plus months for a violation notice to be sent for a total of 7 months between the original complaint and any substantive action by the county.. The original complaint was filed with the county in December of 2010, no action was taken by the county until 3-2011 when the site visit was conducted and the notice of violation was not sent to the property owner until 6-20-2011.

Here is a link to the status report generated by Island County Planning and development that shows the timeline and actions taken by the planning department:

WHIDBEY NEWS TIMES

North Whidbey Fire and Rescue is hoping to have a new administration building located on Highway 20.
The commissioners decided during a Tuesday morning special meeting to make an offer for the former Whidbey Island Mazda dealership on the northern edge of the city.
Fire district officials didn’t provide an exact dollar amount they are going to offer, but it will be lower than the $1.95 million listed price. The Whidbey Island Mazda dealership closed in August.

I would venture to say the audience that Ms. Homola was speaking to was a collection of local government employees/elected officials dependent on taxpayer dollars and that is why she received applause.

The votors were quite clear in the soundly defeated property tax increase that was included in the past election.

Apparently Ms. Homola and the rest of the county commissioners are blind to the fact that a clear majority of Island County voters want the county to fund basic services and not to fund most of the feel good programs that our county has saddled us with.

I would suggest that if these programs need to be funded that they look to the public at large to make donations to keep them floating. Our property taxes have for years been used to fund many programs that benefit small interest groups and not the public at large. Let the people pay for these programs instead of the property tax payers.

Does it make sense that the county commissioners are defunding the sheriffs office to preserve many of these feel good programs?
The sheriffs office is a critical service to Island County taxpayers and here we have our commissioners cutting the budget for this critical service preserving money for items that clearly are not essential services.

It is time that we find county commissioners who are more in tune with the people of Island County and the wishes of the majority of the citizens
