At the Commissioners workshop on Wednesday the Commissioners discussed removing the Law and Justice Levy from the ballot.
The Law and Justice Committee along with the Commissioner on that Committee has decided now that Island County has enough funds available to start the process of hiring new employees for the sheriffs department without having to go to the citizens for additional funding. Where will this funding come from? Mainly from the reserves that the County has set aside.
I do not believe that the other Commissioners feel that it a wise idea to dip into the County reserves to make this happen.
It is rather troubling to see all the public funds spent on this levy and all the time, discussion, contentiousness and meetings that were wasted in the process if this is now going to be removed from the ballot. The basic homework should have been done on this by the Law and Justice Committee before it ever should have been considered.
I am not going to attempt to explain this, instead I have edited the audio from the Commissioners Workshop on Wednesday so that you can listen to the discussion yourself and come to your own conclusions.
