Initiative 522 is on the ballot this November and there are a few Letters to the Editor in the local fish wrappers advocating passage of this initiative. These letters have two main messages: The first, encourage the rest of us to vote YES on I-522 simply because they tell us that I-522 is a good thing. Secondly, Monsanto Corporation is an evil capitalist one percenter because that corporation is spending millions of dollars in opposition to I-522.
Rob Lewis is one of those letter writers who want YOU to vote YES on I-522 yet his opening sentence to his argument:
“I don’t know whether genetically-modified food is harmful or not.”
How can anyone vote YES on I-522 and encourage others to do the same if they DON’T KNOW whether genetically-modified food is harmful or not? Unfortunately Rob Lewis’s statement echoes the mindset of many uninformed voters therefore, these same voters will vote YES simply because Rob Lewis told them to.
Just what is I-522 you ask? I-522 is “AN ACT Relating to disclosure of foods produced through genetic engineering; adding a new chapter to Title 70 RCW; and prescribing penalties.”
Proponents of Initiative-522 are essentially stating that genetic engineering is bad for you, and the environment. Their solution is to require new labeling on food products and ultimately force farmers into raising ORGANIC only crops, and force consumers into buying ORGANIC only foods. They claim “most genetically engineered crops are designed to withstand weed killing herbicides. As a result, genetically engineered crops have caused hundreds of millions of pounds of additional herbicides to be applied to the nation’s farmland. The massive increase in use of these herbicides has caused emergence of herbicide-resistant weeds, which have infested farm fields and roadsides, complicating weed control for farmers and encouraging use of increasingly toxic and more dangerous herbicides. These toxic herbicides damage the vitality of the soil, contaminate drinking water supplies, and pose health risks to consumers and farmworkers.”
Proponents used fear mongering to advance their agenda and ignored the fact that genetic engineering, using their example, is to produce a plant that is resistant to herbicides so that farmers rely LESS on herbicides. Proponents also omit other positive benefits of genetic engineering such as altering DNA strands in crops to increase yields, make them more drought resistant, or make them resistant to pests and diseases. Proponents see this as a bad thing and putting a label on food to alert consumers to genetic engineered foods and pushing them to ORGANIC only foods is the cure.
To become an “informed voter” look at the detailed observations from those opposed to I-522: http://www.biofortified.org/2013/02/analysis-of-washington-state-gmo-labeling-initiative-i-522
Hopefully, you too will vote NO on I-522.
