Press Release- Lucas Yonkman Candidate for Oak Harbor City Council Position 4

Author:Publius

Friday, March 22, 2013
Oak Harbor, Washington – Lucas Yonkman, a lifelong Oak Harbor resident, disabled veteran, and local businessman has announced his candidacy for Position 4 on the Oak Harbor City Council. Yonkman, in announcing his candidacy, has also announced the platform on which he is running and his reasons for doing so: “I want to bring the voice of Oak Harbor’s citizens back to the city council, to take a good look at our expenses and find ways to make it more affordable to live in our great city, and above all to ensure transparency, honesty, and accountability in our City Government”.

“While I appreciate the service and sacrifice of current and past councils, I see the need for change. It is time to shift our priorities from the needs of a few to the needs of all. We must ensure the fair and unbiased representation of all Oak Harbor’s Citizens, not just some”, Yonkman said.
Yonkman is putting together his campaign team and with continued support hopes to reach the citizens of Oak Harbor with this message. “Public officeholders must remember who elected them and what they were put into office to accomplish. Our elected officials should constantly seek out the input of The People on matters affecting their city because the voice of the people is the most important part of our great republic. I feel that voice has been lost in Oak Harbor, please join me in bringing it back!”

FWIW, Lucas Yonkman’s team is not being nosey; the reason for all this information is to help them in reporting required information to PDC on schedules as they require

Good start Lucas! Proves you’ll do things correctly to get elected and more important, after you become a Council member
WE NEED YOU to. “… shift our priorities from the needs of a few to the needs of all.”

    God Bless

Lucas will be a great addition to the City Council. For the most part those on the current council are being told what to do, how to do it and advice from select people in the city…..we need a person like Mr. Lucas Yonkman. Spread the word and help him get elected.

I am glad you said for the most part and did not include everyone

Jim Campbell will always have my vote. He listens to the public. Lucas will make a fine replacement for a not so good councilman.

A few of them sit on the left and 1-2 sit on the far right so I think that does not include you….thanks for taking a stand and listening to the citizens…..looking forward to a great campaign season…..sure it will be entertaining with those that think their seat is secure……ha

“A few of them sit on the left and 1-2 sit on the far right…”

Personally, I do not perceive anyone on the City Council presently to be anywhere near the “far right”.

I base my statement on the recent voting record on a particular issue which can be delineated as having a “left” and “right” (e.g. firearms issues) and which some members of the City Council decidedly acted to INJECT the City Council INTO, whereas, in WA State, it was 100% unnecessary for them to do so in the first place.

Perhaps you would care to correlate which of those “few” folks you perceive to be on the “left”, and which “1-2″ are on the “far right”?

My reference was not in respect to being on the left or right in that regard…I meant to infer “they” sit on the left side of the chamber and the right side of the chamber….I totally agree with your other comments.

In that case, your “left-right” commentary was/is that of a bubblehead.

I Was trying to be nice by not naming those select few councilmembers who need to say good-by and let people who will represent the people instead of making issues and playing political games.

The five City Council CLOWNS who block-voted to IGNORE the firearms’-related issue vote on Oak Harbor Municipal Code the first time it came around to them for a vote all need to be replaced with people who do not play political games as elected officials.

“Oak Harbor City Council openly violates state law by voting to uphold clearly illegal City Code regarding firearms in public parks”
      http://www.islandpolitics.org/?p=8196

There’s nothing “not nice” about delineating the voting record of an elected official along with an informed opinion about that vote.

Based on your comment….Rick Almberg, Joel Servitious, Beth Munns, Bob Severns and Tara Hizon all need to be unemployed. Those that are up for relection hopefully will be replaced by others who will standup for the citizens who voted them in to office. Hopefully, we can get rid of the :Good Ol Boys” and get something accomplished for the good of the City, Then you have the Attorney who is calling the shots with those council members and speaking out about the marina advisory board…..what a bid mess….he should be replaced as well and get him out of the city spot lights…he likes it to much…

You are entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts.

On that original December 2012 on firearms-related City Council vote to which I alluded,”The motion passed by a 5-1 vote, with Campbell voting in opposition. Councilwoman Beth Munns was absent.”

With respect to “the Attorney who is calling the shots with those council members and speaking out about the marina advisory board…”, it does, again, very much appear that said attorney and some City Council members clearly have an obstructionist agenda that intends simply to obstruct the mayor at all costs. In my opinion, a committee with either five or seven people should be able to function.

Does anyone but me see the irony in that attorney arguing to a seven-member City Council that going from five to seven members for a marina advisory group “…might facilitate too much discussion, which potentially could result in delayed action and even a decline in member participation”?

Since all seven positions are all “at-large”positions on the City Council, perhaps the Oak Harbor City Council should also have the city staff draw up a resolution to reduce the size of the City Council to five members instead of seven, since keeping it at seven “…might facilitate too much discussion, which potentially could result in delayed action and even a decline in member participation”?

That was a pretty clear statement that said to me the advisory board chair has commanding control over his other board members and he does not want that to change at any cost.

        When he states:
“might facilitate too much discussion, which potentially could result in delayed action and even a decline in member participation” it is a clear statement that leads one to believe that if the marina board is enlarged and enlarged by those not in this special clique that the new marina board members will see the same type of obstruction as the city council is now enjoying. This was almost stated as a threat to the council, a shot across the bow so to speak… and knowing our council they will take it to heart and vote with the chair because of the threat, at least some of them will…

Our council needs to remember that this is the citizens marina and not just the marina advisory groups marina. More public participation by regular citizens and business owners may upset the status quo that the current chair enjoys but by adding more members and more non marina users to the mix will certainly bring new ideas in how we manage our marina and how we use our marina to benefit our city.

We need to look at our Marina as an asset to the city and not just a playground for a special few.

Credit does need to be given in that the marina is self sufficient but if the marina does not do the city any good except for race week in regards to bringing tourists and boaters to the city maybe the city should divest itself of the marina and let a private company take over. At least then we would see if a private enterprise can leverage our marina to actually bring people into the city for the other 51 weeks of the year that are not included in race week.

Ity is pretty clear we have a city council that is ineffectual and embarrassing to the city. Only Severns, Campbell, Paggao and Campbell are up for relection this year. I would certainly keep Campbell, Paggao seems to not be part of the good old boys and does seems to vote based on the facts and not politics. The rest do need to go for the betterment of the city.

As for the marina advisory board it is no wonder that we have a marina that does very little to add to Oak Harbor. With only one non customer allowed on the board it is clear that this is just another special interest group looking out for their own interests. The city council needs to realize that this marina is the citizens of Oak Harbor’s marina and needs to benefit the city not just the special interest group comprised of marina customers.

Maybe that is the reason we see Anacortes and La Conner capitalizing on their marina and drawing people into the city with their Marina and Oak Harbor giving up on anything that would attract people to the city after race week is over.

Where is a business representative on the marina board? Where is the citizens representative? With only one at large position it does seem that this is just another example of a special little clique in Oak Harbor controlling their own interests.

Cliff, It is Severns, Paggao Servatius and Campbell who are up for reelection

        1. avatar

It does appear I buggered that up didn’t I?

You are correct, there are not 2 Campbells on the council :) Even though we wish that were the case it was Joel Servatius that needed to be included instead of the phantom second Campbell…

Maybe wishful thinking on my part :)

  8. avatar

Nicely said by all…now lets hope we can change the direction with new members to the council….people who will work for the good of the city and not personal gain.
